Plan a small seed starting tray before sowing
Match seed packets, tray space and lighting before filling more cells than you can look after.
A tray with twelve cells does not mean you need twelve mature plants. Start a small seed sowing plan with the containers or growing spaces you expect to fill later. Then decide which crops you actually need to start indoors.
Count the destination spaces
For a hypothetical patio with room for two mature plants, filling several large seed trays creates a later space problem. Write the destination beside each crop on your plan. Allow for uncertain germination without assuming every spare seedling will have a permanent home.
This is a planning exercise, not a suggested spacing for any crop. Mature plant size and spacing come from the variety’s instructions.
Keep the packet beside the plan
A seed packet gives crop specific sowing information. University of Maryland Extension’s indoor seed starting guide discusses timing, growing media and light for young plants. Its regional calendar is not a national planting date.
Copy the packet’s sowing depth and timing guidance into your notes. Check local extension guidance for your growing region before working backward from an outdoor planting date. Some crops are better sown where they will grow, so do not start everything indoors simply because a tray is available.
Make space for the light and labels
A tray tucked onto a spare shelf needs a suitable light arrangement, not just an empty surface. The extension guide explains the role of grow lights in raising transplants. Follow the fixture’s instructions for placement and keep water away from electrical connections.
Before sowing, set out the tray, labels and seed packets. Write the crop, variety and sowing date on each label. Keep a matching note outside the tray in case a tag moves. Leave enough space to inspect the plants and reach the tray without lifting it over other seedlings.
